April's man-made spring showers

No we weren't watering the other day (we've already recorded more than our average of 55" of rain this season). But rather, testing our sprinklers as it is now frost season. We had four frost mornings last month: March 15, 16, 30, and 31st. In our Rennie Vineyard we use sprinklers, which spray a mist over the grapes to ward off frost damage. As the water freezes, it generates heat while forming a protective capsule of ice around the buds. The temperature inside stays at a constant 32 degrees- just warm enough to prevent damage- as long as the water continues to flow.
After bud break, a spring cold snap can destroy new growth on an unprotected vine in just 15 minutes. When the temperature drops below 32 degrees, water inside the vine freezes and expands, bursting the cells in the delicate new shoots. That would mean no crop. More than enough reason to jump out of bed in the middle of the night whenever our alarm rings!
