Flowers at Work
Our Rennie vineyard, planted with a cover crop that features mustard, is a different look for Yorkville Cellars. Normally our cover crop consists mainly of legumes to add nitrogen to the soil. Yet mustard has roots that go deep into the soil, breaking up the heavier soils, allowing water and nutrients to penetrate to the root zone. Another plus, mustard naturally fights off some of the soil pests that feed on vine roots (additionally, it is very attractive to look at!) We know that when we can get even the flowers to help with pest control, we are working well with nature- something we always try to do.
