Bloom in our vineyards

Bloom was several weeks late this year because of the cool and unusually wet spring. Bloom is when bunches of tiny flower buds that look like pinhead size green beads form. Within each cluster the flowers open over a period of several days. Each flower is self-pollinating and only fertilized flowers develop into grapes. High temperatures (90+ degrees), rain and/or wind interfere with fruiting. This year was a struggle with both atypical rain and very windy conditions. Our fingers are crossed that this will reduce crop size (which we typically do by hand anyway) and help the resulting small yield turn into one with very high quality. Excellent for wineries, like ourselves who only use our own estate grapes; not so good for farmers who sell their grapes to other wineries at a set price per ton.

Introducing our new Malbec

We’re seeing more and more Malbec on the shelves in fine wine shops – mostly from Argentina, where they have 40,466 acres planted. In Bordeaux in southwestern France where it originated, Malbec is a traditional blending grape. Regrettably, there are only 970 bearing Malbec acres (compared to 71,536 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon) out of a total of 440,296 acres of vineyard in California. Consequently, it is very difficult to find Californian Malbecs. Our customers are certainly happy that we produce a Malbec each year. Yet we're sorry that a fair bit of disappointment is caused as our Malbec is most often our first wine to sell out each vintage leaving many long months with no supply.

Our Malbec is terrific for summer barbecues, pork ribs or chicken. Or try with teriyaki glazed salmon.
