harvest photos
Today
we harvested our Cabernet Sauvignon. Here are a
few shots so you can see how it looked in Yorkville early this morning.

Long
"Hang Time" - Yes, please.
We're
very pleased with the quality of this year's Cab. The grapes reached
our targeted Brix (think sugar percentage) of 24 degrees s-l-o-w-l-y. A
long eleven days to get from 22 to 23, followed by nine more days
to get from 23 to 24. This slow maturation ("hang time")
provides intensity of flavor and greater complexity. Having cooler
hillside vineyards above 1,000 ft. elevation has been a big advantage
as many valley vineyards picked Cab in early September after a heat
wave pushed the sugars up very rapidly.
We
Mendocino farmers are fortunate to be enjoying an Indian Summer
again - this afternoon it nearly reached 90 in the vineyard. After
today's pick we're about 60% harvested. Depending upon the weather
forecast, the end of this week could be the peak for us. As the
challenge each vintage is to get all the grapes in before the rains!
Cabernet
Sauvignon is on our mind... Monthly Special:
Cab
We
have very little left of our 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon, which
was harvested on Nov. 1, 1999. With two years in small French
oak barrels plus three years of bottle aging, it is showing very
well now.
