2006 Petit Verdot

See our complete wine selection

Never tasted a Petit Verdot? You’re not alone. It is unique and seldom seen, more often used to add complexity to a Cabernet or Bordeaux style blend. There are only 1,344 bearing acres (compared to 75,909 of Cabernet Sauvignon) of it out of a total vineyard acreage of 475,219 in California.

A late ripening grape, usually the last that we pick. Ours has great aromas: spice, sandlewood and berry notes. Plum and cherry fruit flavors mid-palate, finishing smooth and rich with medium tannins. You have the choice of drinking it now or waiting. The other night we enjoyed a 1996 out of our library with roast pork and can confirm Petit Verdot ages well.

Due to individual state regulations we can only ship to the following 29 states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. We can also ship internationally, however it's pretty expensive.

Winemaker's notes

Harvested on Oct 31st, grapes were crushed and settled in open top fermenters, and slowly fermented to dryness, taking over two weeks. Aged in oak barrels, 83% French for 20 months, blended with a splash of Cabernet Sauvignon and bottled after gentle filtering. Drink young, by 2010, or allow 6-8 years from the vintage for a aromatic, supple quaff.

Pairing with food

Pair with stronger flavors, such as

Putanesca sauce, mole or

a selection of salumi.

Matches with cheese

Try it with raclette, Leyden (with cumin seed), or Pecorino Pepato (with peppercorns).
